The first six weeks of school are incredibly important. The tone established in that short amount of time is essential. It is during this time that children learn how to take care of the classroom, share their work, and learn about one another. Also students begin to learn how to give and receive feedback, determine class agreements, and lay the groundwork for councils. Classrooms at Innovations Academy have students participating in self-governance, self-direction and expressive free use of materials. So If your child comes home saying “I’ll we did was play.” They really spent the day mastering one of these skills.
This week we will be laying the groundwork for Writer’s Workshop. The first unit is called Strong Sentences and powerful Paragraphs. We will be working on creating interesting paragraphs with sentences with lots of details. Student’s will be choosing their own topics. They will than practice the art of revision.
It's amazing how much natural learning takes place amongst peers and in an interesting and inviting environment!
